A new ‘Flight Familiarisation’ module is being added to Global ATS’ Basic Training Course (BTC) from 2013. With the final refinements being made to the new module before its addition to the existing BTC course, Adam Mullins Global’s Chief Instructor is enthusiastic about the team’s latest development: “It’s going to provide students with a fantastic opportunity to see what happens from the pilot’s perspective whilst also allowing students to see how ATC instructions make a difference to the pilots”, explains Mullins. Andy Cameron, Director of Colleges and Courses anticipates the latest module will be valued by students and employers: “The BTC is European Common Core Content and UK CAA compliant. With the introduction of Eurocontrol’s Part Task Trainer which helps to provide more practical training and with the addition of the real flight familiarisation module, which is all delivered from our college at Gloucestershire airport, student’s will be involved in ‘real-life’ situations and will be able to relate classroom subjects to ‘real life’ experiences. “With no increase in the cost of the enhanced course for 2013, we are looking forward to receiving enthusiastic feedback from our customers and students”.

The key benefits of the module include:

Practical appreciation of cockpit workload at critical phases of flight and of the cockpit working environment

Practical appreciation of aircrew considerations in an emergency or unusual circumstances

Consideration of hazards in flight and on the ground

A grounding in the concept of Threat and Error management

Practical application of the Nav lessons on the BTC and consideration of how easy it is for a pilot to get lost

Practical application of the dangers of overuse of aircraft GPS with regard to Controlled Airspace infringements

Practical application of Met lessons on the BTC from the point of view of the pilot and associated hazards

The opportunity to see non radar precision/non-precision instrument approach being flown manually with no autopilot input.

The opportunity to see a PAR/SRA being flown from the aircraft and relate this to controller responsibilities/considerations

Familiarity with the airborne environment

Practical appreciation on the difficulties associated with lookout and operating in different classes of airspace

Practical demo of the D&D cell auto triangulation feature and practice emergency handling on 121.5 MHz

Appreciation of the difference of how 1 nm appears to a controller versus what 1 nm looks like in the air

Aircraft instrument appreciation and operation

Flight planning considerations from a pilot’s perspective
