Controller

Designed for experienced controllers, the course covers all aspects of On the Job Training and includes a pre- course ‘Distance Learning Package’ which entrants are required to complete prior to attending the course.

The training prepares prospective OJTIs to conduct training in accordance with the Unit Training Plan. It also equips future OJTIs to prepare, train, monitor, evaluate and debrief trainees.

The course further trains for STDI duties which form an additional privilege of the endorsement.

The full course incorporates theoretical and practical instructions, demonstrations and a verbal examination. Because of this, the full course must be completed on-campus.

Approach Surveillance (APS / SRA)

This course enables on successful completion, the award of the Approach Control Surveillance (APS) rating with SRA endorsement. The APS course provides comprehensive theoretical and practical training in complex approach surveillance techniques including:

  • Vectoring
  • Speed control
  • Sequencing
  • Providing Flight Information Service (FIS)
  • Arrival and departure planning
  • Overflights
  • Coordination
  • Abnormal and Emergency (ABES) / Degraded Situations
  • Surveillance Radar Approaches
  • Surveillance degradation

The practical exercises cover a wide range of traffic types through exercises of increasing complexity and density.

Approach Procedural (APP)

This course enables on successful completion, the award of the Approach Control Procedural (APP) rating. The APP course provides comprehensive theoretical and practical training in complex approach control procedural techniques including:

  • Analysis and application of separations
  • Providing UK Flight Information Service (FIS)
  • Arrival and departure planning
  • Overflights
  • Coordination
  • Abnormal and Emergency (ABES) / Degraded Situations
  • Holding and Expected Approach Times (EATs)

The practical exercises cover a wide range of traffic types through exercises of increasing complexity and density.

The course is run in two modules: controlled and uncontrolled environments.

Aerodrome Control (ADI / TWR)

This course enables on successful completion, the award of the Aerodrome Control Visual and Aerodrome Control Instrument rating with tower endorsement.

The course covers tower training on an enhanced visual simulator, with IFR and VFR aircraft movements and the control of vehicles around a large international airport environment.

Basic Training Course (BTC)

This course has been specifically designed to meet the UK CAA requirements for ATCO Basic training. The training course provides a foundation for the theoretical knowledge and basic practical skills required for the career of Air Traffic Control.

This course is mandatory before undertaking any initial ATCO rating training course.

Assistant Course

This course is designed to prepare entrants to carry out the role of an Air Traffic Controller Assistant and incorporates airfield visits, practical instruction, written and/or verbal tests.

The course runs at a relaxed pace and the entrant receives a certificate to confirm their successful completion of the course.

Feast Test

The First European Air Traffic Controller Selection Test (FEAST) assesses the knowledge, skills and abilities of applicants for Air Traffic Control (ATC) training that are relevant and necessary for the ATCO job.

FEAST Service is currently used by 45 organisations. Some 55000 candidates have completed the FEAST selection tests since the start of the FEAST Service.

Global ATS is licensed to conduct these computer based tests for candidates in Eurocontrol member states and outside Europe.

The FEAST service:

  • is a professional state-of-the-art web-based testing tool
  • improves the quality of selection decision making by ATC recruiters
  • contributes to the cost efficiency of the overall recruitment and selection process and
  • helps to increase the success rate of ATC trainees.

Aptitude Assessment

Under the control of a highly experienced and accomplished instructor, entrants will undertake a series of tests to assess theory, practical and communication skills. The tests will focus around:

  • Classroom tests
  • Simulator assessments
  • Interview with the instructor

A report will be provided which outlines the entrant’s strengths and weaknesses in relation to the key areas that are essential for a career as an Air Traffic Controller.
